Hey guys, question for you.

I'm about to install linux on my old dell laptop (dual-boot with windows). I will be using this computer primarily for surfing the net and programming. I have almost no experience installing or using linux, but I have used unix a lot at work.

What version of linux would be best for me to use?

Also, I have a desktop that I might put linux on as well and use it for a file server, what version and software would work best for this?

Thanks for the help.

Ubuntu is the current "popular" distro. From what I've heard it's fairly simply to install and use.

I personally use Fedora, which isn't very difficult either.
