I have an "old" pc here, its not really old but i got a new one and my "old" one is full of ... rubbish (i never had any firewall etc). And i want to try out a linux with a gui on it. Apparently 256MB ram is enough to use some boot cd distros, but i cant seem to get sufficient information or locations of boot cd distros. does anyone know of a good one i should try.

The computers diagnostics:
Manufacturer: Time (if that actually matters)
Processor amd athlon, 1.2Ghz
256MB ram
16X DVD ROM

If any other information will be needed then just ask.

Thanks for reading this, i hope you can help.

Edit: Is "Knoppix" any good?

LiveCD List
that site has a link to the distro's main page, its size, primary function, download link, and has a vote submitted by people on which they like best. i'd say give a few of them a try and see which one you like / suits you best. you shouldn't have any problem running any of the above on that hardware.
do you know who provides your video support? (ati/nvidia/brandx?)

whats the make/model of the modem?

and by 'the ethernet port is broken', do you mean that its physically broken? or that it you can't get it to work in linux?

i had a Zoom one before and the one i have now is part of orange broadband. Their install disks (for usb) only had windows installs. and the ethernet port never worked, linux didn't detect it either like it did with the other hardware. i think the actual slot that the nic card is in is broken somehow.
