Technically, linux is GNU Linux. It is the linux kernel with the GNU operating system. And I don't know squat about unix, except that the internal kernel is not the linux kernel. So that would be the biggest difference is that they are two entirely different kernels.

Technicalities apart, I still prefer calling the "entire thing" Linux. Sure, GNU forms a substantial portion of most distributions, but I don't think that's reason enough to elevate it to GNU/Linux.

Yeah, but take something like a motorola cell phone or something that has it's own special operating system. It has the linux kernel, but not GNU. I still just call it linux as well, it is less words for me to stutter out in casual conversation.

Sad panda? I must have missed something. I've missed so many things actually.

I'm sorry... I meant I... bring it up in every conversation?

But no really, where I am, starting a conversation on pretty much any OS is guaranteed to start a giant argument among IT kids about why [Windows/UNIX/Linux/OS X] is better than [Windows/UNIX/Linux/OS X] because it's much more [secure/usable/polished/stable/widespead/compatible] than [Windows/UNIX/Linux/OS X].

It gets aggravating after a while..

don't worry, i dont really understand it myself. there was this one time i was hanging out with this chick, and her "ex boyfriend" txtd her and told her not to do anything that would make him a sad panda, which was about 5 minutes before we headed to my bedroom >.< but for some reason the phrase stuck with me lol

Sad panda...Panda must have been some sort of a kinky pet name they had for him. It is probably better we don't know.

No, I hear people use the sad panda thing all the time. It's one of those things that you just sort of understand... in the same way that you understand half the random crap on the Internet.

We've kinda strayed off topic here... back to UNIX vs. Linux.
