In a few months, Wikipedia will finish a major transformation by moving from a combination of versions of Red Hat products to Ubuntu Linux Version 8.04 on all 400 of its servers that support the Web site.

...

The move to all-Ubuntu was primarily done with the goal of 'making our own administration and maintenance simpler,' [Brion Vibber] said. 'We decided that we want to standardize on something.'

Thanks for posting that. It's interesting that they never used any MS server software.

My nutshell guess is that it's what the majority of their existing staff have running at home already.

Well, not always. There is no perfect OS nor server. Windows, Linux and Unix all have something to offer, both on the client side and server side.

A few weeks ago I was installing a security camera system with my uncle in a motel, and I noticed that all their computers had ubuntu. In fact, the computer we put in that is basically a DVR for the cameras is the only windows computer they have now. Thats pretty cool.

I agree, interesting but not really surprising considering the type of content they are hosting. If you put it on a MS package you'd increase your maintenence time significantly not to mention policing the regular updates to cover the security flaws.
