So I'm working on a website for a client who demands that there's a marquee at the top. Granted it's a news ticker type to reflect scores, I still hate moving/bouncing/blinking text. So I do the design and get everything working, and then go to validate.

Line 116, Column 150: there is no attribute "SCROLLDELAY".

Line 116, Column 169: there is no attribute "SCROLLAMOUNT".

Line 116, Column 173: element "MARQUEE" undefined.
by using vendor proprietary extensions such as "<spacer>" or "<marquee>" (this is usually fixed by using CSS to achieve the desired effect instead).

I can't use CSS to define scrolldelay or scrollamount as they aren't valid CSS selectors (see here).

Code: [ Select ]
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
  1. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
  2. "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

Does adding the <marquee> screw anything else up other than the results of validation ?

That's looking look my only option. Oh well. I'm guessing validation isn't at the top of the organizations' list :P

There's always the option of a Flash or Javascript marquee.

I've looked into Flash...I'd prefer to avoid JS though.
I was hoping maybe there was some archaic CSS property that was introduced in CSS 1 that I didn't know about :D

Yeah unless you've already got a JS library loaded for some other purpose(s), I can see how it would be hard to justify the filesize for a crossbrowser animation library just for scrolling stuff.

During the initial interview after I got the job him and his partner explicitly stated they wanted Javascript rollovers...it took about an hour to talk them into CSS instead. I'd hate to defend JS links if I convinced him to let me use a JS marquee :P
