does it exist? every time i ask the software companies if their shopping cart software is completely customizable, at least the way it look to customers, they say something confusing like, "yes it is totally customizable within our template." or, "yes, with our template, you can customize the look of your cart to look like your site." so then they point me to a bunch of examples of sites that have used their shopping cart software, and they all look exactly the same, except for the products. i guess sales people will do anything to shut me up and get me to buy their product. anyway, any thoughts would be harshly appreciated.
thanks people!

First - welcome to OZZU
Second - Please don't start new posts on the same problem.
Third - I supplied the link above, because it basically provides you with the one you need - You'll see all the references to OSCommerce. It's free and you can customize it however you want if you know what you're doing, as several here will attest.

Yup, osCommerce is a GREAT piece of kit, and can be customized 100%, of course, you may need to go "under the hood" to do it, and you must know PHP pretty good to do that.

But, even without much PHP knowledge, you can start using it right away, then modify it as you figure new things out.

There's a million and one modifications out there for it, which are available from the osCommerce website, with many people posting in the forums offering support.

I've heard good things about oscommerce. Worth trying out to see how well it works on a test run before using anything for eral. I was thinking of setting up a second domain just to test the cart on before doing it live and for real.

I know this post is old, but i recommend pdshop from pagedown tech. they have a good rep for ASP and ASP.Net shopping cart software. http://www.pagedowntech.com/

ive used oscommerce, its great and open source, BUT remember if you want it fully functional , its best to add lots of modules such as SEO friendly links, tag, des. key. optimization so it grabs content form site and sticks it in your tags, umm they have other modules that are pretty much necessary for the shopping cart to display its full power.
much luck

VirtueMart is a great shopping cart thats FREE, but It works primarily with the joomla content management system. THere are other types of versions of virtueMart on the website as well, so you might just check it out.

If it's your first e-commerce website than i recommended you use PayPal service.

When building an website that will sell your products, you need to have the most important feature of all. Security!

Designing Credit Card transactions should be done with adequte planning and a way that will keep sensitive information safe.

Pay Pal provides not just the code but the peace of mind.
