The fashion industry drives almost all color trends. http://www.fashiontrendsetter.com/content/color_trends.html

However, you should probably read up on color psychology and choose colors that fit your message and NOT because they're simply trendy.

I think cellphone releases is another good place to look for popular colors. There were some crazy colors made this year.

I don't think you can look at it like that anyway ... let's say you're doing a website for toddlers and you make it black and orange ... I can almost promise you it's going to be almost impossible to make a site like that popular ... but maybe for selling electronics you can use black and orange ... you have to know who your target market is ...

People have different tastes. Only the suggestion is not to try to satisfy needs of them all at once :)

If you go with any combination of black and light blue, and black and orange, black and white, it will look great, other wise it would look odd. Its your wish to do what ever colour you wish to use.

What ever happened to that Flash movie about Color theory you posted ages ago dM ?

I learned a lot from that thing & used to use the link to it as my answer any time someone I know asked me if I liked their colorscheme, but a few months ago it just vanished. :(

I'm not sure. If you Google for 'interactive color wheel' you come up with some nice tools, though.

for instance...

Try http://www.colourlovers.com/ It lets people create and submit schemes. You can search other schemes and see if you find stuff you like.
