A long time ago i have read an article explaining why that happens - why fabicons disappear from favorites list, leaving behind them a regular 'e' logo :(
It was such a silly reason, nothing to do with downloading programs to fix it.

But theres no chance i can recall where or even when i read it.

I think you can find it previously in this post. Roughly the 1st or 2nd page.

wow, I'm impressed - a 4-year long thread!

http://iconfu.com will convert between .gif, .png and .ico images (there's an upload link at the top of the page) ... it's free for icons up to 24x24px

it does much else besides but that's a story for another day

Best .ico (desktop or favicon) editor, IMO: IcoFX http://icofx.ro/ or for screenshots http://icofx.ro/screenshots.html . Better than some paid apps. I'm actually surprised this thing is free. I use it all the time though.

Favicons are needed to help your brand. I believe some browsers don't use favicons though.

I use Format Factory (http://www.formatoz.com/) or Favicon.cc for an easy in-browser creation. (http://www.favicon.cc/)

I love favicons... :)

It helps add a modicum of branding to the sites in our network.

I use the one at dynamic drive:

Here is the way I add an icon image.
Code: [ Select ]

<link rel="icon" href="ICON IMAGE SOURCE" type="image/x-icon" />
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="ICON IMAGE SOURCE" type="image/x-icon" />

  1.
  2. <link rel="icon" href="ICON IMAGE SOURCE" type="image/x-icon" />
  3. <link rel="shortcut icon" href="ICON IMAGE SOURCE" type="image/x-icon" />
  4.

The hard part is finding a good proggy that will convert your image files to an ico file.

I came across a web page last week that suggested that other graphics formats were supported. Sorry I don't have a link... on dial-up tonight. :oops:

Nice information

I use photoshop to make the .ico files but in some case you must first install a photoshop addon (it was required to me).

Thanks for the tips. Favicon has indirect benefit in terms of SEO because it help visitors to recognize your site through the icon which shows up in the tab and it help somewhat in branding your logo.

Flash site would be no different than any other site. You'd make the favicon exactly as described in the posts in this thread.

I use a program called Microangelo. I've used it for years. I don't think it's free, but it allows you to embed many icons into one. 16x16, 32x32, 256 color, millions of colors, etc.

It comes with a cursor studio, so you make animated cursors etc. as well as some other stuff. I believe there is a demo version, and if you don't mind forking over a few bucks (I think I paid $25 for it years ago) it's really good stuff.

Microangelo is a great program for making icons, I've used it a lot.

I had this problem in IE. I try to add the link or meta tags but didn't work, so I started to look at the format of the icon file.
It appeared to be a valid icon file (not just a renamed image), but what fixed it in the end was to convert it to an image, save it as a GIF, and then converting it back to an icon.
Also make sure to clear the IE cache while you're testing.

Use a png file, because it looks better if it's transparent.

I think it also depends on what theme you use with firefox. Im using japan black and it doesnt have any favicons in the tabs. That may be something else I have set but I think its the theme itself. But if you havent changed themes and other sites favicons show up in the tabs and your doesnt I dont know what to tell you...
