I just simply opened up a picture and made it 16x16 and saved it as favicon.ico in the root of my website, But its not working in either Firefox or IE.. Am i missing something?

I searched around and i read that only just adding favicon.ico in the root folder will do the trick..

Oh and i just renamed it to favicon.ico from favicon.jpg .. As Ms Paint doesnt have an option to save in ICO format

You can't do that. That won't format it properly. You need an icon creator. See the sticky post at the top
website-design-forum/design-tip-favicons-that-small-icon-the-address-bar-t20434.html

There are several recommended in there and additional tips on how to create them.

I made a blog entry on how to create a favicon, you can check that if you like cosmocentral.com/2008/03/transparent-favicon-how-to-make/

Make it with Photoshop. How-to in this thread. Or you could make an animated, as explained in this thread.
I'd love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

Just so you know MS invented favicons so, of course, IE will not support them, makes perfect sense to me.
