Google made an announcement yesterday that they are making their Page Speed tool, formally for internal use at Google, publicly available.

Quote:
Page Speed is a tool we've been using internally to improve the performance of our web pages -- it's a Firefox Add-on integrated with Firebug. When you run Page Speed, you get immediate suggestions on how you can change your web pages to improve their speed. For example, Page Speed automatically optimizes images for you, giving you a compressed image that you can use immediately on your web site. It also identifies issues such as JavaScript and CSS loaded by your page that wasn't actually used to display the page, which can help reduce time your users spend waiting for the page to download and display.

Great concept...you know except for the part about it not being compatible with FireFox. Which considering it's only available on firefox, yet not compatible with it...Google: the new Microsoft.

Download the latest copy of Firefox, the plug in isn't compatible with any of the latest versions.

Did you notice that Firebug also needs to be installed for it to work? (and no betas)

Both installed fine for me. 3.0.10

I just installed both. I actually really like Firebug and Page Speed. Both seem useful to me and Page Speed does offer information I never considered before.

Not to mention I just used it on OZZU and I think Bigwebmaster would be interested in the results. To use it you have to open Firebug first then open Page Speed.

//lol I posted before I saw your post. I knew you'd be interested lol

Yes I noticed and installed firebug. Firebug is not compatible with the latest version of firefox and there is no update for firebug.

Try it if you dare. Uninstall everything then re-install from the website versions.

This looks like a pretty handy tool, I'll definitely be giving it a better look come the weekend.

Firebug is not compatible with FF 3.0.10 or 3.5 beta.

Firefox was a great idea while it lasted. Back to a real browser, ie: IE

I have firebug 1.05, FF 3.0.10 and it says they are not compatible. I clicked to check for updates and it found no updates for firebug.

Hence, the page speed checker doesn't work either.

No matter, I never use FF. It's the "lonely programmer" tool. People that have girlfriends...well we don't care because we have girlfriends. :-)

Probably because Firebug is up to version 1.3.3
I take it you didn't click the link I posted. You're using an old outdated version.

I can't get it to do anything useful here either. Everything's up to date.

Knowing Google it's probably got Java dependencies and I generally kill Java off as soon as I find it on my systems.

Could be that I'm on 64-bit Ubuntu too. Google seems to suck at 64-bit desktop application support, let alone Linux support.

I am already with firebug. Now coupled with page speed also adds more meaningful results to me.

Wow. It really works. And no impact on the images is seen. Great tools.
