The image that shows up next to a page title in a tab is called a favicon.
Now that you know that, the multi-page sticky at the top of this forum titled Design tip -- Favicons - that small icon in the address bar. might make a lot more sense.

Why would we do that, chances are you're not the only one who will learn something from this thread.
