Hello,
Can anyone tell me how I could put some streaming text across my website using html codes? Unfortunately, I use Geocities as my webhosting, and they do not offer this as one of their options, so I'm assuming I would have to insert html code to make an announcement on my page.
Thank you,
J Lanz :D

It basically looks like a text box that has a phrase passing along through it. It then loops around and starts over again.

Aside from this, dont do it. Scrolling text is annoying at best. I dont mean to stomp on your dreams or anything like that. But please dont do it. Scrolling text is right up there with ALL CAPS, sure it draws attention, but its hard on the eyes. Make a graphic that says what you want and draws attention. Or use bolded/different colors to draw attention just dont make it scroll. I would almost rather see <blink></blink> than <marquee></marquee>. And usually if I see blinking text, it might get 2 blinks before I either close the window or hit the back button. Of course this is my opinion and holds very little value outside of my little bubble I like to call home. At least consider comming up with a more creative way to display and draw attention to your text other than scrolling.

I agree 100%. Scrolling or blinking text is a sure fire way to make your website annoying and amateurish.

Strangely enough, the <blink> command never works for me  (Good thing to )
Also, as far as I can remember, <marquee> only works in IE (and Mozilla?).

This Javascript should help. It's not really scrolling it fading and then makes another masage to apeare, but it's close inough on what you are trying to acomplish. It's great for anouncements too.

Code: [ Select ]
<script type="text/javascript">
var delay = 2000; //set delay between message change (in miliseconds)
var maxsteps=30; // number of steps to take to change from start color to endcolor

There are a few rules you might want to be familiarized with. Like writing words with apastrephies (e.g. what's; that's; Matt's).

Here how those type of words should be written like.

We\'ll
What\'s
That\'s
Matt\'s

So basically you put a backward slash (\) in front of all of the apastrephies (').

This code gives you some directions between the commentaries (///No need to edit below this line/////////////////)

Good luck. This is a tested code so you shouldn't have any problems.

I just found another Javascript code for this type of thing, but this time it's a scroller. Great for anouncements too.

Check it out.

The directions are simple. Just fallow the comment in the script, but be sure to backslash the words that have the apastrephies. we\'ll that\'s what\'s Matt\'s

It's almost just like the above script.

hope this works.

You can also make some really great ones with Java Applets. Go to http://www.htmlgoodies.com for some good examples of Announcement Streamers in Java Applets.
