I have the following site - http://www.susanbuck.net. A lot of it is generated with asp from an access database. Everything was working fine - but recently only one or two of the thumbnails on the left menu will load in firefox - it just stops loading the page...meanwhile, it will load in safari.

What could be causing this? Is it issues with my asp/database setup? firefox? my host?

You have a bunch of broken image links on that page.

These 4:

http://www.susanbuck.net/sb/imageLog/im ... ans2_t.jpg
http://www.susanbuck.net/sb/imageLog/im ... tans_t.jpg
http://www.susanbuck.net/sb/imageLog/im ... lDay_t.jpg
http://www.susanbuck.net/sb/imageLog/im ... otel_t.jpg

Or is that another issue?

The image files seem to be messed up somehow.

But I'm drawing a blank as to what is wrong specifically.

(They're not in Safari's cache by any chance?)

hmm very weird.
ive been posting the same way since october. The only variables I can think that has changed is that in december I switched to an apple. Still using photoshop though. Also, instead of using "save for web" I started using "save as" and then saving as a .jpg.

Could this be causing it?
So is it that the images are getting screwed up and for whatever reason safari can handle it and show them, but firefox cant get past it?

How interesting... I fixed it...I took all the thumbnails and saved them again this time using "save for web" then uploaded them again, and it seemed to fix things...

The large versions of the images that i also used just the "save as" method on all show fine...so it must have some problem with the thumbnails.

A complete mystery if you still ask me, but at least I found a solution.

I switched away from the "save for web" method because I found it was making my images less saturated...I guess ill havae to go back to it for the thumbails at least which is ok because it dosent matter as much with them.

Well thanks for your help, your comments got me thinking about what could be different, and i was able to solve it.

susan,

perhaps it was just that - the color settings... there are certain color profiles ordinary browsers don't really dig (why cmyk stuff never shows up in browsers)... you should have some flexibility with that in photoshop's optimization process...

you also might want to just try save as... and save your images making sure they're RGB and, in the jpg menu (with the whole sliding optimization scale), make sure you selet the top option (i think it's Optimized(Standard) or something like that)...

see if that works...

don't know if that made much sense... i'm a little tired... anyways, hope it helps...

"save as" is where im having my issues...its when I use save for web that it actually works... but yah it must have something to do with the color profiles like you said. I want to figure out exactly what it is because , like i've said, using save for web washes out the image.

have you tried what i suggested above while saving as?

when you save as as a jpeg in photoshop for the web, first make sure that, under...
Image -> Mode... you have RGB selected (as opposed to CMYK)...

then, when saving, you'll get a JPEG Options menu...
there, you can play with the quality, but the key part is making sure you select:
Baseline ("Standard") as opposed to, say, Progressive...

perhaps that's a little more clearly put than what i wrote above... did you try any of that?

There was a similar bug to this in Photoshop 7.

Anyway, what led me to think the image files are messed up is this: if you
load the image in Firefox and then "view source" you can see all the code
that makes the image. So the images are there - but as you have discovered,
they are having problems.

roarmeow -
yup thats what my settings looked like for the save as...

is it possible that my images to begin with are screwy...they're coming from a canon digital rebel... in jpg format, compressed already, not raw.

well... i'm at a loss... that sucks...
i know that you have some leeway within the JPEG compression settings in the Save for Web menu, but apparently that's not working either...
that's carazy...

SugarKane, what's this bug you mentioned...?
