Password lock Public_Html

Is there a way other than making a .htaccess file to lock the Public_Html folder. I want to only let cetrian people in becuase i am not ready to release the webpage yet. if there isn't how would i make one

you could use a CGI/Perl or PHP script to output HTTP 401 messages, do a google search for "Locked Area Lite"
