no doubt this is a simple one, but if I've got a link to, for example, a pdf file.
When clicked on, it opens inside a browser window by default
Is there any command, possible with the <a href> option, that will force it to pop up with the Open/Save dialogue box, hence giving the user the chance to save it to hard disk?

I want this because remote users of mine click on a 10mb pdf, and have to sit and wait while it opens. Their lack of knowledge about how long its got to go forces them to give up and close it.
So by forcing a download box, they can see how much is to go and then work locally with it from then on

Hope someone can help

Tommy

I think you can do it with Java, But I would just add next to it the words "right click save target as" that what most do ;)

the only way you can really do this effectively is to zip it up. It's an extra step for you and the
visitor to get to your document, but it's the method you seek.

If you do zip it then do it with the "no compression" option or "minimum compression" option. trying to reduce data in a pdf is a waste of time - I found that out the hard way lol.

//I'm <b>not</b> saying not to do it that way, but it makes sense to use no compression because the zipping/unzipping will take less time. Hope I've made this clear :?

because they are clicking in a javascript menu system that doesnt allow a right click.

a right click will open up the link as a left click would

I'll probs just save it as a zip file, that will at least show them how far its got to go

thanks guys
