Scrollbars within CSS containers

I have this scrollable DIV, meaning scrollable by use of overflow:auto. The (vertical) scrollbar shows up indeed when it has to, but by doing so it "compresses" the div content as it apparently takes up space within the container.

This is quite annoying, as the result is that the div content shifts to the left and no longer lines up with the remainder of the page.

Would it be possible to re-arrange the div in a way that - if no scrollbar is present - the content does not take up the space which has been left by the disappearing scrollbar?

Regards, Charles
