Hi, I just have a few short questions regarding site maps.

Is it necessary to have a site map on your website?
Do people/users actually use site maps when they go onto a website?

Any thoughts...

About site maps... you don't need one if your navigation is great. Site map is usually put into place if the navigation is bad or by the preference of the web developer. I sometimes check the site maps or even forced to use site maps if there is no search present.

Although, site maps are a good way to show everything your site has to offer on one page...

It's up to you.

Site maps are an excellent way to get search engines to crawl your entire site (and they also promote usability!). A google/yahoo sitemap is a great resource, and there's next to nothing required on your end.

Site maps help if your site is more than 3 levels deep, otherwise there is little point in having them if your navigation is OK.

Our company has just started to produce a Google Sitemap for every website we host. As some every now and then have a problem with getting cached every now and then, i think its quite a good practise to create them when you put a site live.

I think this increases the chances early on of the new site being cached quicker.

By adding a sitemap to Google we got several important pages indexed. While they were linked from the main page, Google didn't index them before.

Long story short - it takes roughly 2 minutes to download a free program to do it for you and export the xml file, it can't hurt to have one ;)
