I myself made a server side app with php to display thumbnail catalog and enlarge thumbnail while thumbnail is clicked. My catalog is designated to be used at local intranet so loading time is not really matter because I just SHRINK image in thumbnail with <img src="mypicture.jpg" width="mythumbnailwidth" height="mythumbnailheight"> and not resizing image itself at all.
Basically I just shrinked thumbnail display with current image ratio.

hmm.. I mostly use GIS to make thumbnail to my galleries, you can get it here, you need php for it to work.

veedee: the way you do is not too good since if you have wallpapers, photos etc. it takes extreamlt long time just to see the tumbnails and it loads all the pictures at the same time.

You can also just make a "recording" in photoshop and then play that and It will do what you did when you recorded, its really good for making thumbnails if you dont want to use something automatic.
