I am designing a page for my site right now that has thumbnails
for a bunch of fish. like 120 to be exact the thumbnails ended up being
like 3kb a piece at the most. total image download for page will be like 400 or 450 kb for the whole page.

My Question?
Is this too many images to have on the page?
I dont want to break up the page I want it to be setup so the user can
scroll down the page and see a pic of every species of saltwater fish from florida.

Let me know

Doug,

Link to the page if you can would be helpful. I can test it on broadband for page load time and I'm sure others can for dial-up -- I'm at your site but couldn't find the link.

Thats the rough draft.
Remember ecery cell you see there will be a different fish.
I think there 120 fish total.
There should be 120 cells give or take a couple there.
What do you think?

That'll be fine, I think your image size is just right.

That was about 1 second load (or less on broadband). Hope that helps -- P.S. I love Islamorada -- what a great place!

It looked really fast on mine, but this because you currently have the same image in each cell.

You will have some modem users lag out especially they are on a slow connection. But for the majority 400 - 450 is okay size for one page.

it loaded really fast on my PC and I have the slowest connection in the world, not only just a modem but connected to an extension from the phone in the house next door (I have no landline in my house) down miles and miles (well, about 40 metres) of extension cable. It seems to have extra resistance. I've yet to find anyone with a slower connection than mine. It's most frustrating but at least it's good for testing sites.

I would be interested to see how fast it loaded when you have 100 odd different thumbnails to be loaded but as it is, it loaded very fast.

On my dial-up connection, your page took 15 seconds to load. Nice!

Although, I am wondering... why do you display the same four images 30 times?

Unless someone is looking for a certain fish, they will probably be looking at the loaded pictures while the rest load anyway :D

I'm on 56k dialup, had an initial wait of about 3 secs, with 1-2 new pictures every second. Not long to load at all for someone that actually takes the time to look at them :D
