Some websites are W3C validated and some not. Is there any compulsion that one should carry out w3c validation?

No.
w3c validation make sure you comply with w3c standard and it generally make sure that your site will run on most major browser.
Good html code also ensure faster page load on browser. Browser do not have to guess for best view.

I don't believe it's mandatory but along with that it helps things look the same among the major browsers, it also helps maintain good coding habits. I like and practice doing it. locust what are you trying to say about doing it, what are these people called? Em...em. Geeks are they, eh?

W3C validation badges are like the health department certificates at fast food joints. Everyone should have it somewhere it can easily be found by those looking for it, but it doesn't need to go up on the main menu board.
Strong with this one, the sudo is.

Nice one, joebert

Except from the things that are already said: I also think it tells something about the webdesigner. If you want to make websites of good quality, be sure to make them valid too.

W3c validation is not a compulsion , but to make your website search engine friendly , and Google check the w3 c validation before listing your website.
