I was in the same position as you UNFLUX, but when I tried to install two scripts one PHP and one Pearl, and they both required some files in my CGI-bin folder, I think I was starting to get it after a while. You are right, it should be more accessible, but I think if one buys a "learn PHP in 21 days" book, I think it should address this misconception. Does anyone own one of these books?

I have seen a few of the "learn something in 21 days" books, and I really do not care for them. I am a fan of the Oreilly books. On my other site http://www.bigwebmaster.com/ I list numerous books including the learn something in 21 days series for all types of languages... which by the way can all be CGI!

I checked with my host and the cgi that i have supports php but does not support mysqrl. Is my sqrl nessecary for a phpbb forum like this one?, and if so is there a good forum system that only requires php and not mysqrl?

Thanks again for your help!

Yeah PHPBB requires MySQL so you should try RBeau's suggestion, since that one does not require MySQL.

http://www.yabbforum.com/

I have been using this script for my own forum for close to 9 months. Very similar to this forum, but not as flexible.

It uses Perl for the language, but doesn't require MySQL or PHP, so it should work just fine on your domain (my limitations are very similar to yours on my domain and it works).

It's not nearly as easy to set up as this one. You do have to modify a couple of the Perl scripts. You'll need to know the path to Perl, be able to modify the paths on specific variables and be able to set the path to your provider's formmail. I'm only vaguely familiar with Perl and although I can usually modify most scripts to suit my needs, this one is a little tough for a beginner. However, it works almost as efficiently as this board software. Once it is installed it's very easy to administer.

My board is here if you want to take a tour of the features:

Personally, after lurking around here and installing this phpBB earlier today, I like this one much better. If you can get access to PHP and MySQL without much additional expense, I'd say it's worth it.

if you have ssh access, you can type 'whereis perl' and whereis sendmail' to find the info about perl and sendmail...otherwise, contact your host and they can tell you both :)

I once bought a book called "Learn C++ in 24 Hours." Maybe next time I'll buy that bridge in Brooklyn that I hear is for sale.
