Sorry for the stupid question, but I notice that we talk about a lot about the importance of have the right words or title in H1 or H2. What exactly does this mean what is the relevance of it? I’m trying to build my own web site but don’t have much experience in the field.

Well they stand for heading and the number helps search engines and humans understand hierarchy with 1 being the highest and 6 being the lowest. So H1 is the most important item on the page, H2 is next most important and so on. The best way to describe it is to look at a printed newspaper (if you can find one anymore) Notice how the top headline on the page is biggest and then as the stories get less and less important down the page the headlines get smaller? Its the same idea with a website.

as graphixboy says, they are used for styling your web page for human consumption, but they also serve as hints to search engines as to what are the important words on a page.
