Post 3+ Months Ago

I am looking to set up a website with a forum as the main part.

I do not know whether to use php or asp ( i am new to both so would have to start from scratch on either)

the hosting package i use offers the following:

NT Hosting

Our NT plans are an ideal entry level web hosting solution, features include:

World class technology
99.9% Uptime
POP3 email account
Unlimited email addresses
ASP + Perl support
Database support (MS Access 2000)
CGI support
FTP access

Does this support PHP? There is a second option I can purchase from my hosting suppliers:

Unix Hosting

Our High-End Unix hosting is geared for the more demanding web site, features include:

World class technology
99.9% Uptime
POP3 email account
Unlimited email addresses
E-mail forwarding
ASP/Perl/PHP4 support
Database support (MySQL)
FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
CGI support
Personal control panel
Web statistics
FTP access

This seems to offer everything I need but I dont know what 'Unix' is?

Can anyone help, sorry if these questions seem simple, but so am I

ur first package does not support php

and Unix is a type of operating system.
Which means your second package is a server which uses Unix as its operating system. As opposed to the first which uses a windows NT operating system to run.

I would recommend php over asp, but either is fine. You will find more php scripts out there then asp. Plus asp is microsoft so thats a reason not to like it right there :).

Theres a good chance that if you just want a message board you wont have to learn php or asp. You can just download a free php or asp forum script. Two popular php ones are Invision boards and phpbb. This site is running phpbb.

Hope this helps

Before going paid, I suggest checking out if it works on a free host, and if it does, go paid :)
