Hello All,

Doing a redesign of this website: http://programmingsolution.net/

It is a Knowledge, Tutorial based website covering almost all topics
related to Programming. C#,PHP,JavaScript, and etc.

I am trying to keep the design very simple and easy to navigate.

The primary focus is the Articles I want them to be easy to read and find within the site.

Need some advice on the sidebars for Navigation which ones should stay
which should go?

Or add something completely different?

This is what I see when I view it:

Just in case there are differences on different computers and etc.

If you have a different view please give me screenshot too that would help.

I am a Web Developer and not much as a "Web Designer" so need big help with this one :)

Just not 100% happy with it but stuck on what to do.

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Brian Davis

Hi Brian,

I attached a screenshot of what I see. You definitely have some cross-browser issues. I was using Firefox 8.0. In the screenshot I circled in red the area that stood out to me as not looking right. It is in the upper left hand corner.

Other than that when I look at the material on the page it seems kind of hard to read. For instance that top one with SSRS just shows a few links which aren't actually links as you would have to copy and paste, and its all inline. The next post right below that about "Finding Immediate Parent to calculate growth" seems just as difficult. That one shows a bunch of code all inline and no line breaks or anything. Very difficult to read and would make me want to leave quickly as I would feel I wouldn't be able to learn much if I cannot read what is on the page. So I would suggest working on that as well as fixing some of the bugs on the page.

Also at the very top in your header, is that something you are still working on, as the pulldown does not work there for me. That is one if the first things that stood out to me as being somewhat useful, but it doesn't seem to work.

A positive thing is once I go further in your site on a specific topic/post, things seemed to be formatted more nicely and was easier on the eyes.

Looks like the site has some potential, but you have some work you still need to do. Hope that helps you some.

Bigwebmaster,

Thank you very much for your review.

Very useful.

The first page posts are not done being edited, I had them to post into the future hoping I would get to it later but that time had come and I didn't had time to edit them thats the reason they are the way they are.

The upper left corner is a serious issue.

What screen size do you have?

I made the site specifically for Firefox thats what I develop it with.

The very top menu is just part of the header image right now.

Its a screenshot from Visual Studio.

But, you think it would be a useful pull down menu?

I thought about doing it for sometime in the future but not right now.

This is a screenshot that I see using FireFox

Again thank you very much for your great review!!!

Thanks,

What version of FireFox are you using? My screen resolution is 1920x1080, but when I resize the browser down to half my screen it does not make any difference.

For the fonts you are using in that section I notice you are not using any web fonts. You are using:

"Arial Narrow"
"Myriad Pro"

If you are going to use non-standard fonts you will want to make sure you embed any that are not guaranteed to come with a browser. An example of a way to embed a font is to use @font-face in your CSS like this:

CSS Code: [ Select ]
<style type="text/css">
@font-face {
    font-family: "Myriad Pro";
    src: url(myriad.ttf);
}
.topsection a {
    font-family: "Myriad Pro";
}
</style>
  1. <style type="text/css">
  2. @font-face {
  3.     font-family: "Myriad Pro";
  4.     src: url(myriad.ttf);
  5. }
  6. .topsection a {
  7.     font-family: "Myriad Pro";
  8. }
  9. </style>

You would need to upload the myriad.ttf file to your server in the location you reference.

So after looking a bit, I believe the reason that is happening for me with it all jumbled up is that since my browser cannot find any of the fonts you specified, it is using a standard font instead which ends up taking up more than one line for site's title and pushes the rest down.

You have a lot of potential here. Specially with a good URL name. Site looks pretty good so far, liking what I see. The logo is a little iffy. I feel like there could be a better programming image there. I feel like i have a Taskbar at the top of my screen :P. But overall its not that bad. Good luck on everything.

Hi,
In Firefox the whole content is on the left side. It looks muck better centered.
I like you have rewrite url.
Another thing, many html errors on validation (no valid html).

Hi! kbdavis07 Just now I have visited your website. It is really looks nice,professional and very easy to navigate but there is no attraction in your website. It will be nice if you add some images related to your website concept in the website as it will attract more visitors to your website.
