Post 3+ Months Ago

I have just opened my new website, SurpriseSite, which can be found over at:

http://www.surprisesite.net and very shortly at .co.uk also.

The site is similar to Google's 'I feel Lucky' button, and will drop you off at a random website, which is great if you are bored! When more sites join up, a category system will be introduced, which will make your visitors much more targetted!

It's only $1 to join for LIFE, and your very own admin has already done so!

Please leave all comments here, about the design, idea anything!
I look forward to reading your comments and hope you decide to join!

Well for $1 I dont see why anyone wouldnt submit there site, unless they dont have paypal. $1 for life is worth the change of 1 person finding your site. Greate Idea! Also it seems you dont have many sites on there, so for those people that really want to get a good deal Sign up now, if I had some spair cash I could but im a poor high school student and my site isnt done.

For the color it looks fine, but I would change the Click Into Surprises! to a bit darker color or make it an image with a drop shadows so you dont have bright on bright.

One thing I might suggest if you dont all ready have this is to create a database system to track what pages are being redirected too. Just to make sure your not having a not so random pick. Nothing created by man is truely random.

Many thanks for your detailed comments!
And yes right now is the best time to get in on the system, while it is still new.

You will be glad to hear that a Database system is on it's way which will make the backend much more easier to use, aswell as the inclusion of Categories, which will offer webmasters Targetted hits!

I will see what I can do on the green now :)

Cheers,
Chris

I personally think this is a lot better than the I'm Feeling Lucky moniker.

I have already found a few neat web sites through simply cliking the big green button. Nice idea, and great pricing! $1 for life isn't bad at all! :=)

The design is also nice, clean, and simple. I've noticed a lot of web sites these days that do not try ot follow the K.I.S.S. principle (Keep it simple, silly.)

Good job!

Arent there some sites not appropriate for younger eyes? I would like to be able to pick a category or limit sites with adult content. The first site I came to went to a site with something about a party for 21+ people!

And I suspect you will get a lot of commercial sites. What about redirect sites? Could I pay $100 and get 9 redirect sites to my main one and then appear almost 100% of the time?

Another small thing. I notice you have redirect.php. Why not integrate that right into the main page so you never have to go through that page. Some computers do not accept the javascript.top=? as a security feature so it takes about 5 seconds for it to go.

What about a second option to like crosslink and get listed? Maybe crosslinkers get a 1/5 chance of paid people to be featured. Then you could get tons more visitors to your site and a higher google rank.

For the domain checker, start it with "http://www." so people know they dont have to include that.

Anyways, just some thoughts. Hope you incorporate them and good luck. If I had a paypal account with some money in it I would register myself.

I really like the idea for the site, generating randum site to visit. But, the design is a little off for me. Im not into the logo at all. It looks very childish, and the red/green links hurt the eyes after awhile. Maybe darker the colors so they contrast the white background more. I would probably add some kind of border/background box to the main part of the content. I have a large screen res and it all seems to be sitting out in the open, kinda out of place. Giving borders could provide more structure to the design. Not sure I would post the "Database" info either, let the visitor be suprised. (and its not clear what the dollar amounts mean to me?!?) Anyways, i do love the idea and it seems to be very promising with more participants. Looking forward to what will be happening with this site.

Nice idea.

I got the same disagreement about the Click Into Surprises!

Instead of it being the green colour - for it to be one of the colours used in the P, I or E from the logo as the green text below the logo clashes with the logo green text in my opinion. It also doesn't help it stand out any further due to this clash... though I am no design expert it is just my initial reaction.

FAQ: -- I feel the faq section would increase user readability if it was aligned better, maybe even just in an unordered list...

Categorization is good as the website grows.

It has the ability for repeat visitors that should maintain steady traffic and as you said as categories are introduced, there is a targeted market of curious surfers.

There is some development opportunity, some ingenius through its simplicity and best of all from an advertisers point of view is that $1 is not gonna affect their budgets.

I will pm you a couple of ideas to play with that I have thought just now that may benefit you in the future development of this. Hopefully the ventureis successful :P

Many Thanks for all your kind comments,I have forwarded your comments on to the nice chap who helps me with the site.

As for the design, I am aiming to keep it simple.
But yes I will try and get the logo changed.

No you couldnt, as the maximum payment we accept is $10 per unique site. We try to encourage this, so the site is not bogged down with one BIG investor.

Cheers,
Chris

Yes I knew the answer was obviou but you havent mentioned it anywhere was the point.

Oh and about getting rid of redirect.php hw you do it is simple if you want the code:

linklist.txt
http://www.zap.com
http://www.azoundria.com
http://www.sponsor1.com/indeex/hi.php
http://www.sp2.xe.ge.ca

the code itself
<?php
$links = file("linklist.txt");
$link = array_rand($linkslist);
?>
<a href="<?=$link?>"><img src="surpriseme.gif" border="0"></a>

is that updating the site every time?

From the look of it I am not seeing how we are getting a "Suprise Site" Each time that is why I used redirect.php in a popup window. The wider audience will not have javascript disabled, so it is not a big hassle yet.

My first guess was to try something like that but then when you are clicking the image you get the same site, over and over. Right?

No, my code makes the link for the image point to a random file. array_rand selects a random entry from an array, which is gotten from the file "linklist.txt". Oh but I see now that I made a mistake. You need:

$link = $links[array_rand($links)];

in the second line of the file. Sorry my brain must have been over in outer space somewhere before because I made not just one but two mistakes in 5 lines of code!
