OMG, another unfinished site.
But it damn rocks!

here is -as a student- what I would change:
The preloader ofthe intro shows like a city-building game, and then in the intro there is only images of idiots like Franz Joseph and Columbus. Can you make it more specific showing it's a game? Or -rather- gonna be a game???

You mix flash design with photoshop. Is it Photoshop u used to make the ground on that little cute town?

But my verdict stays: AWESOMEEEEEEEE!

As far as the intro is concerned, my main crit is that I do not think the music selected for the intro is appropriate. I would expect to hear some ambient, classical, or some sort of a more dramatic theme selected, to better describe the material/product.

As far as the site design, I think its adequate, but there are some readability issues with some of your links, like "Newsroom", "Forum & Chat", The WK Team." Very hard to read, I had to look up close. Theres no reason these links should be more readable as they are important.

Otherwise, great job.

I agree with derek on the links; the blue is very hard to read. The navigation at the bottom also looks choppy and blurry, any chance on changing that?

You missed the Canadian flag for the english :P

The intro is alright, looks a bit...hmm not sure of the word. The image usage in the flash looks un-professional. Also, the breakout game - it's unplayable in Firefox. The start button is overlapped by words, making them unclickable. CSS issues?

Canadian flag is in place!

Loved to see Canadians protesting on someone's visit to Canada today... LMAO...

About the break-out game, the link is here: http://www.worldkit.com/wk_whatisWk.asp, and the game is there temporarily... Gonna fly soon, replaced by the real WK game, so I never bothered to have it compatible with Firefox and Netscape... :)

Also agree on the music, sorta looking for a better loop. Any suggestions?

About the "non-professional images" agree on that too... Gonna solve it soon! :)

Thats a pretty impressive site. I never realised this topic existed and just had a wee look through your site.

The general idea looks pretty good, although it does replicate some other games such as Civilisation etc etc.

I liked the intro, although as others have said the music is not really the best. But from what i have seen on this site, i am impressed. I need somebody that can create a site like that to perhaps help me out at as i am useless.

Well done though! great site!

City building prototype version 1.0

Let me know what you think please... Entirely made in Flash MX 2004. Very rudimentary, but I am actually giving it away for free. :)

Great work Abelius. When I was first using the Flash program I was thinking of what a great CAD program it would make. Its a really good and unique idea, well done. Having said that, a few thoughts.

First, images. All of the text images in your footer (site map, downloads ....) are scruffy, it doesnt look professional and I think takes away from the good work you've done on the site. The other text images at the top are crisp and clear, try and go for that effect down low too.

The other thing, in the Design box area, you use a very dark grey font, doesnt fit the color scheme. Make it either a light grey or white would probably suit it even better. Its just hard to read, which is never a good thing for a website, especially when the text describes the main attraction to the site.

I was also going to suggest changing the green background you have to white or black, but I realized that you need the green to make your program effective. So stick with it. Overall, very well done, extremely useful program.

WOW! What can I say. I love it. Opens up 'real style' games on the internet.

I made my self a little town and zoomed in and out. Do you plan to make this into a full Sim City style game. If it was multiplayer against other visitors this would be very cool.

Good Luck,

Thank you both, and here are the answers:

It will not look like SIMS, and you can see the look ofthe real buildings in the downloads section, under "wallpapers"... The only reason I used simple buildings on the v1.0 was for simplicity and speed...

It will definitely go multiplayer, through LoadVars and combined with live SQl data..

The only thing that I disliked was the green on the main page. Maybe a bit darker, it's tiresome for the eyes.
Anyway ... It's just great. I put some houses on the map. Great. Love it :)

Very nice. A strong recommendation I have is to be able to continue to place the object desired on the map rather than having to go back and select it again and repeating that step just to build a long road....

As far as the objects are designed - very nice, they all look believable. Nice touches with the shading as well.

Wow, that's a great guestbook. Kind of makes me change my whole opinion on the subject.

Before I signed it, I was thinking you were placing that pin based on location entered, which would be an insane amount of work. Your way works much better I think though, it allows the user to be more interactive. I also like the little boy/girl/couple characters.

Great stuff

I'd drop the jpgs in favor of vectors for the maps, the "jpg effect" takes away from the design & doesn't go well with the pushpin imo.

You did a fantastic job. I love flash and by looking at your creation i now why.
The site is even do it is flash very clean.....i like that in a site. The only thing what i think you should change is the speed of the house that's turning around....can you make that slower or did you use that speed for a reason?

Again....very cool and i will visit your site more than just this review. :D

Besides, once the buildings are incorporated in the game there will be no rotating, unless you press < or > before you place them, to adjust how you want the building in your city...

Wow! Talk about hot and cold!

Your use of design tools is top notch. I'm just starting to dabble with Flash and you helped me to realize just how far I have yet to go. You should have no problem finding work.

On the downside, you don't take a Ferrari and plaster "Bad Cop - No Donut" and "I Brake For Bake Sales" bumper stickers all over it. I'm on RoadRunner and I gave up on waiting for the page to completely load. Your work is too good. You simply must make it possible for people to enjoy it. I suggest giving visitors non-animated thumbnails, with perhaps one live example on the opening page. Once people see your work on one of the images, they will be drawn to check out many more.

Ummm... not sure what do you mean by "load each flash at a single time"... :)

If what you mean is to place them into ONE file, so they load one after another, I also thought about that...
But how would you do to load them subsequently, if they are separate files, and simply stacked in an HTML (or ASP) page...?

you'd put them into seperate files, take one master flash file and load each one, one after another so that while a user is waiting for more to load, the first ones are done. To do that, you will have to rework the proloader so that it is on the file that's loading the files, rather than the files themselves.. don't know if that made any sense but, it did to me.

Excellent website you have designed :) Only problem I see is the load time. It loads very slowly and I do not have dial up. You might want to create several pages for each graphic; this might help speed up load time. Best of luck to you.

It looks good overall, but i would suggest not putting all the animations on one page. Ive been noticing that people who come across pages that are really long generally don't scroll all the way down.

May not be right for your site, but thats my 2 cents.

edit: that may help with load time too.

If you guys could check that page and tell me how long it took to load, that would be great...

Although I have to highlight one thing: These files are HUUUGE. In the real game, they will NOT be so big for the following reasons:

1) These files are for show-off purposes only, and include ground textures and extended shadows. In the game the ground will be there already (as per Map Editor) so no texture there. Also, shadows will be limited to the width of the object, so it doesn't overlap on other objects...
2) These files have 40 different rotation angles, one for every 9 degrees in a 360 degrees full circle. That's gigantic! In the game they will offer only 8 different angles (45 degrees rotations) that you can choose from, and trees will only carry 2 or 3 different angles. That will reduce files by some 78%...
3) These files are saved as pixel-by-pixel bits without processing them through Fireworks MX. That was basically because I had no time to do them so. In the game they will be png-based files imported into Flash as a Fireworks object. That will mean another 45% reduction of file size. The other reason to do so is that in the game those buildings are supposed to turn into day and night colors as the day-and-night cycle goes along the game...

All in all, a "tree" that has some 850 KB in the gallery, will have some 36 KB in the game, and a building of some 900 KB will go down to approximately 85 KB...

Good enough? LOL

OK, this is the page I would like to get reviewed...

And here are the details:
Is it too sluggish?
Fonts too small?
To slow to load?
Graphically speaking, please, what do you think of the little icons?

Also, what do you think, should I add a prieview of the files before a download kicks in? (It's ASP based, and the coding is home-made... LOL)

Getting another Bud in the meantime.. :)

I like the cute icons. The site looks very promising. It's a little slow, yes. I think the big globe on the main page is a little much. At least make it more transparent maybe.

It also is nice and clean.
Fir inprovements? I think it's quite good already, you simply need to get some more members to register at your site, so that more poeple will post news and such on there.
Also the forum layout fits perfect with the site.
You ask us to be gentle with you, but well, it's a nice and clean site.
With clean I mean that the layout is good and that it is easy to navigate trough.

Are there supposed to be drop down menue's? Because they wont work for me in the navigation. I use Opera 8.0 Beta.

The first thing I thought was that it would be such a bonus if you had a .tv domain. It would suit your site's goal to a tee! Ah well, take what you can get. To the site. Not bad, good colors and relatively good navigation. I would consider renaming that Recent Topics portion to Hot Topics just to throw off a little flare and allure. Then where you have the 2 links (more...; Visit Forums), first of all, take off that semi-colon, it looks unprofessional. Second, rename "more" to "More Hot Topics" and leave a little space after that, then put "or Visit The Forums".

On that same index page, align the content in the Visitors box to the left, to keep it consistent with the rest of the page. The News link leads to absolutely nowhere. Do I need to be logged in to see something or is it just a blank white page? Either make it a dead link (<a href="#">) or dont put it at all, its quite unprofessional. Another problem with the News link, if I click on the News link at the top (and not the News link you have in the boxed menu) I probably would'nt have noticed the 2 new options you have for that portion (Submit News and Archive). Not good navigation techniques.

The Newest Members box should be changed to the Newest Member as it only shows the latest member who joined. Thats just my anal'ness talking though, not a mandatory change. I'm not sure how long the images in the Fun Games portion would take a 56K'er to load, but you sure include a lof of image links to a lot of games. Are all the link necessary? Does it even relate to your site? The forum itself looks good, I like the rollover effects it provides, very cool.

I think in general you have a good thing going. I'd work on adding a little more color or images to offset all of the white. But you've done a good job with the site.

Well done this site is looking great and when completed should be a work of art.
I have a crap dial up connection and nearly gave up on the opening page as it is too much for my dial up. But I do not think I would lessen the impact of the world ; at he moment it is pretty striking . I think to lessen the load I would rather see the 'world kit' annimation go or the 'visit our design page' animation. whilst they are in themselves alright, I think both together they make it a bit messy.
All in all, petty damn good, with amazing potential.

I can't wait to play the game!

One thing strange is that I see "118259 visits since July 1st 2003" on the bottom of the pages. Yet there are many things still under construction. You would think that a site that has been up since 7/1/2003 wouldn't have so many pages under construction. :?

Site looks very nice, I notice it must be full screen on 1024X768 to really get it I usually don't run ful screen but its somthing I noticed. Also the home button, maybee you can make that a link to home for the current language instead of mousing over home then selecting. I was trying to get back before I relized that was the case. Overall a very pleasing site, the scrolling landscape looks very good in "the game" section.

Wow, that's a long review...
I've renamed "Recent Topics" to "Hot Topics", "more" to "More Hot Topics", removed that semi-colon.
About newest members, i fixed that; it shows now the last three new members.
The rest, still working on them, have some problems in real life and don't have too much time to stay online.
Anyway, thank you very much for your review, still waiting for others...

Ok, about the top NEWS link, i've change it to Home.
Also, i changed the alignment in visitors block from center to left.
About the games section, i know that they aren't related to TV, i was just thinking i'll get more visitors with that. Don't know what to do about it yet.

Cya soon,
Iulian

Your website needs to support all, or maybe at least most of the different browsers. Could you make the links into buttons maybe, and make them change when you move your cursor over it?

This is a little new feature I installed on my website, I would like you to review it, and give it a go!

And here is how it works:
Quote:
SImply look at the map and let us know where in the world do you think this map is located. All maps will be equally scaled and the measurements are aproximately 1 inch = 65 miles.
All maps have been stripped of their cities and towns, latitude and longitude reference lines, names of physical features and names of seas and oceans, if applicable.

After one week has passed we will place the same map with its full legend (cities, towns, transportation, physical features, etc.) so that you can see them as they were originally published.

The people who correctly guess the location of the map will receive an email with a link to download a cool little Flash game, so stay tuned, there will be mini Flash games to win every week! Each member can have only ONE guess per week!

In order to place your guess simply say something like "I think this is northern Egypt!" or "Hey, that's Norway, near Oslo!" or "That looks like western Texas to me!" and after one week we'll publish the list of the ones who guessed right, as well as the map with full legend.

I agree, the site is a little convoluted. And the game isn't self-contained -- to play you are shunted into the forums, and you can see everyone else's answers. No likely. Also, the prize for winning the game is... another little mini-game? Why not just put the games online and drive traffic to the site?

However, overall, the site ain't too bad. The graphics are good, so whoever is behind that, good job. The layout needs some help, not a lot. And the reliance on nifty tech could be minimized. For example, there is an iframe (or maybe a text block clipped with CSS) in the middle of one of the pages, and it's like a FAQ. Just stuck in the middle of one of the pages. Weird.

I tend to think a page should be a page, and there should be some sensible, obvious, organized links into each page. So the navigation could be more comprehensive.

Also, I like the concept for the upcoming game you're offering. Is it going to be free or for subscribers? It sounds interesting.

PS: my 3 year-old son insists I add this icon:

I am sure your site has some great information at it and great graphics. Unfortunatley I find navigation very difficult and complicated. Simplify your site a little. Provide a constant navigation bar everywhere. I couldnt manage to find the quiz thing you were talking about. Whats it called? You should probably provide a link directly to it.

So, did you actually want reviews of your site, or is this just a way for you to get eyeballs? Because, you know, I kinda spent a bunch of time to review your site. It would suck to think that you just ignored all that feedback, didn't change a thing on your site, and are back here just to promote it again without even addressing all the issues people mentioned.

Oh wait, that's exactly what happened. Lame.

I agree, aboyd. And even though Im not sure you will change anythign I couldnt help noticing you dont ask for a confirmed password. Its a good thing I spelled it right the first time. Otherwise Id have ka bit of a problem accessing my account.

And not to mention after I sign up for an account Im brought back to the main forum page and have to find the map game again.

And your smileys... They dont portray their emotions too well. The happy one looks like he just cheated on a test and the one that I think is crying looks like its sweating profucely.

Personally I Would Remove Those Common Library Sounds, That Flash Gives You. Those Are Kind Of Hoaky. Other Than That, Maybe Fixing Thr Images, Some Are Pixelated. Great Job.

OMG very impressive site. Intro is ok. Music does not match with flash design. In some places you can reduce the number of images. Can tweak your punch lines as well.

A very nice flash interface design. Looks pretty profesional on your game web site, the icon is great and cute too, It also is nice and clean.

On your web site, you posted

In Design This is prototype v1.0 of the World Kit CityBuilder.

Improvements on upcoming version 2.0:
# 8 levels of Zoom. Users can build in all of them.
# 50 new buildings. Themes include "Farm" and "Ancient Egypt".
# Waterways curb on mouse dragging. Bridges are included.
# Clouds, rain and snow appear randomly, depending on scenario.
# Day and night effect. Hose windows light up at night on demand.

Your improvements on your web site is the other great inform, let other people keep look on it, this idea is good.

And your web site look well in firefox and IE very well, intration with the HTML and Flash also look very professional. Good flash web site.

Your site is very cool and useful. But it is too dark for me. Dark make the site looks cool. But it is very uneasy to read and use. That is the reason none top ranked site are in dark color. But your site is really cool.
