What sort of errors do you get when you try the /FixMbr option and the /Fixboot options?

Also what is the output you get when you do the /ScanOs option?

FixMbr gets
'FixMbr' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

FixBoot also gets... is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

ScanOs gets the same result too

So just to verify you are typing these in like this correct?:

bootrec.exe /FixMbr
bootrec.exe /FixBoot
bootrec.exe /ScanOs

ahum... well checked. I'd forgotten the bootrec.exe bit. I think my brain is now melting.

ok, it said it carried out bootrec.exe /FixMbr and bootrec.exe /FixBoot
successfully

bootrec.exe /ScanOs made it dispaly...

Okay and after you rebooted you still have the same problem right? If so go back to the command prompt for me and type in this exactly:

set

and let me know the results.

Oh my goodness!! I did set and restarted and the laptop started up, all files still on it and accessible.

My daughter will be over the moon.
I am now copying files from her machine before I risk shutting it down and trying to start it up again but I'm hopeful it will start ok again.

Thank you so much! I can't thank you enough. You've been wonderful.

Awesome! Glad you were able to get in. Definitely get a copy of everything before you reboot just in case! When you do finally reboot let us know if it still works, I would be curious :)

I backed up everything on the laptop, then rebooted. It loaded Windows updates (that I'd removed when doing a system restore earlier in my attempts to fix it) and rebooted fine. It has started up with no problems numerous times since, so all seems well.

If it happens again, at least everything is backed up now, so less of a disaster. My daughter is so happy and thanks you for all your help. It's mother's day in UK in the not too distant future, this will stand me in good stead for that.

I love this forum, it's provided me with quite a few answers over the years.

Thanks again. Your help, time and patience was greatly appreciated
